This is what I did to Chungproof my newsgroup experience.

These instructions apply to Forté Agent (full version). I have been told that the four filters will also work in Thunderbird, but the method of setting them up will obviously be different.

The first thing to do is to create some global filters based on common data in headers. (You can use "Author:" instead of "From:" - it doesn't seem to make any difference.) The fourth filter tells Agent to ignore any thread where people discuss the mad doctor. Reading complaints about him is almost as annoying as reading his drivel.

Because the person of interest seems to always crosspost to sci.med.cardiology, use Agent's crosspost management to hide anything that slips through the filters.

Subscribe to the group sci.med.cardiology and put it first in the list of groups you regularly check.

Set the folder properties to delete stuff from sci.med.cardiology as soon as possible. (Right click on the group name and select "Folder Properties".)

Tell Agent to mark anything that is crossposted as read. It leaves the messages marked as unread in the first group it comes to, in this case sci.med.cardiology, and marks them as read in all the others.

Tell Agent to only show you unread messages. You can do this using the menus, by clicking on the top of the Subject column when you have a folder open, or by pressing the "V" key.

Enjoy a Chung-free life.

Here are some extra filters which can make life a lot more pleasant.
